Hebei 河北 — Surrounding Beijing

Updated: April 2026 | Suggested stay: 2-4 days

Hebei surrounds Beijing and Tianjin, creating an unusual geography — the province is split into northern and southern sections. Historically, Hebei served as the buffer protecting Beijing from northern invasions. Today, it offers quick escapes from the capital: imperial summer retreats, the eastern end of the Great Wall, and ancient architecture.

Chengde 承德 — Imperial Summer Resort

The Qing Dynasty emperors (1644-1912) built their summer retreat here to escape Beijing's heat. The Mountain Resort (避暑山庄) and its surrounding temples constitute a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Mountain Resort 避暑山庄

A 560-hectare imperial garden complex — China's largest — featuring palaces, lakes, pagodas, grasslands, and forests. The emperors spent months here each summer handling affairs of state. The architecture blends Han, Mongol, and Tibetan styles.

Admission: 90 RMB. Open: 7:00 AM - 6:00 PM. 250 km from Beijing. Train: 4 hours. Bus from Beijing: 3 hours.

Eight Outer Temples 外八庙

Eight temples built around the resort in various architectural styles representing different ethnic groups under Qing rule. The Putuo Zongcheng Temple (普陀宗乘之庙) resembles the Potala Palace in Lhasa; the Xumi Fushou Temple (须弥福寿之庙) mimics Tashilhunpo Monastery in Shigatse.

Admission: 80 RMB (individual temples). Located around the Mountain Resort perimeter.

Shanhaiguan 山海关 — Where the Great Wall Meets the Sea

The eastern terminus of the Great Wall, where it dramatically meets the Bohai Sea. Shanhaiguan Pass is known as the "First Pass Under Heaven" (天下第一关).

Old Dragon's Head 老龙头

The literal end of the Great Wall — stone fortifications extending into the sea. The wall here looks like a dragon drinking from the ocean. Restored after damage, it offers a unique perspective on this iconic structure.

Admission: 50 RMB. Open: 7:30 AM - 6:00 PM. 300 km from Beijing. Train to Shanhaiguan Station (3 hours from Beijing).

Shanhaiguan Pass 山海关城楼

The fortified gate with the famous inscription "天下第一关" (First Pass Under Heaven). The pass controlled the critical corridor between Northeast China and the Central Plains.

Admission: 40 RMB. The town itself is worth walking through.

Zhaozhou Bridge 赵州桥

The world's oldest open-spandrel segmental arch bridge, built in 605 AD during the Sui Dynasty. A masterpiece of ancient Chinese engineering — it has survived floods, earthquakes, and wars for 1,400 years. Located in Zhao County, 45 km from Shijiazhuang.

Admission: 40 RMB. Open: 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM. The bridge is functional; you can walk across it.

Practical Information

Capital: Shijiazhuang 石家庄 (provincial capital), but Chengde and Shanhaiguan are the tourist highlights.

Transportation: High-speed trains from Beijing to most Hebei destinations. Chengde: 1-2 hours (new high-speed line). Shanhaiguan: 2 hours.

Best Time: Summer (June-August) for Chengde Mountain Resort (as intended). Shanhaiguan is good year-round.

Tip: Hebei is best combined with Beijing visits. Easy day trips or overnight stops.
