Chengde

Chengde 承德市 — Imperial Summer Retreat & Mountain Resort

Chengde is home to one of China's greatest imperial complexes: the Mountain Resort (避暑山庄), a UNESCO World Heritage site that served as the Qing Dynasty's summer palace from 1703. The resort is larger than the Summer Palace in Beijing and the Forbidden City combined.

Beyond the resort, Chengde is surrounded by stunning natural scenery in the Yanshan Mountains. The area was chosen by Emperor Kangxi for its cool summer climate — temperatures here are 5-8°C lower than Beijing.

The Eight Outer Temples (外八庙), built around the resort to impress visiting dignitaries from across the empire, showcase a remarkable blend of Tibetan, Mongolian, and Han Chinese architectural styles.
