Handan 邯郸市 — Cradle of Chinese Idioms & Ancient Zhao
Handan is one of China's oldest cities, with over 3,000 years of history. It was the capital of the Zhao Kingdom during the Warring States period (475-221 BC), one of the most powerful states of its era.
The city is famous across China as the source of dozens of common Chinese idioms (成语). Stories from Handan's Zhao Kingdom history — like 'completing the tower to steal the jade' (完璧归赵) and 'learning to walk in Handan' (邯郸学步) — are taught to every Chinese schoolchild.
Handan preserves significant historical architecture and is one of the few cities in China where you can walk through streets that existed in the Warring States period.
The iconic Wuling Terrace (武灵丛台), built in 311 BC by King Wuling of Zhao, is the symbol of Handan. The terrace was used for military parades and entertainment. Today it sits in a pleasant park with lakes and gardens. The surrounding area contains excavated Zhao Kingdom artifacts.
