Hengshui 衡水市 — Lake City & Bird Paradise
Hengshui is known as Hebei's 'Lake City' — Hengshui Lake (衡水湖) is one of northern China's most important wetland ecosystems and a haven for migratory birds.
The lake covers 75 sq km and is home to over 300 bird species, including the endangered Siberian crane. It's a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance and one of China's premier birdwatching destinations.
Hengshui is also famous for its Old Castle Wine (老白干), a traditional Chinese liquor with a 1,800-year history.
A vast freshwater lake and wetland system that serves as a critical stopover for migratory birds on the East Asian-Australasian flyway. Over 300 bird species have been recorded, including the red-crowned crane, Siberian crane, and oriental white stork. Boat tours, bird watching towers, and walking trails provide access. Best visited in spring (March-April) and autumn (October-November) during migration.

The old city area preserves traditional Hebei architecture, local markets, and the atmospheric old streets where Hengshui Old Castle Wine has been produced for centuries. Visit a traditional distillery to learn about the liquor-making process.

A 13-story octagonal pagoda dating from the Northern Wei Dynasty (386-534 AD), making it one of the oldest pagodas in China. Standing 63 meters tall, the brick pagoda has survived numerous earthquakes and wars over 1,600 years.
