Shijiazhuang 石家庄市 — Capital of Hebei — Gateway to the Mountains
Shijiazhuang is Hebei's capital and largest city, though it's a relatively young metropolis compared to nearby Beijing. The city grew from a small village into a major railway hub in the early 20th century, and today serves as the administrative and transportation center of Hebei.
While the city itself is modern and largely utilitarian, it's an excellent base for exploring some of Hebei's most impressive attractions. The nearby Zhaozhou Bridge (赵州桥), built in 605 AD, is the world's oldest open-spandrel stone arch bridge and a engineering marvel.
Shijiazhuang also offers access to the Taihang Mountains to the west, where scenic valleys and ancient villages await. The city's Xibaipo (西柏坡) village was the final headquarters of the Communist Party before the founding of the PRC in 1949.
Built in 605 AD during the Sui Dynasty, this 50-meter stone arch bridge is the world's oldest open-spandrel segmental arch bridge — a design that wouldn't appear in European engineering until the 14th century. The bridge features exquisite stone carvings of dragons and mythical creatures. It has survived 1,400+ years, numerous floods, and eight earthquakes.
