Baoding 保定市 — Ancient Capital & White Jade City
Baoding was historically one of Hebei's most important cities, serving as the capital of Zhili Province (the direct-controlled area around Beijing) during the Qing Dynasty. The city's name means 'protecting the capital' — a role it served for centuries.
The city is famous for the White Flower Mountain (白洋淀) — one of northern China's largest freshwater lake systems — and the ancient Baiyangdian reed marshes that inspired revolutionary literature.
Baoding is also known for its martial arts tradition, producing some of China's most famous practitioners. The city's culinary scene, particularly donkey meat sandwiches (驴肉火烧), has a devoted following.
Northern China's largest freshwater lake system, covering 366 sq km with 143 small islands. The vast reed marshes, lotus ponds, and fishing villages create a unique wetland landscape. Boat tours navigate narrow waterways through towering reeds. The area was a base for Communist guerrilla fighters during the Sino-Japanese War, and the famous film 'Small Flat Reed' (小兵张嘎) was set here.

The tombs of Liu Sheng (Prince Jing of Zhongshan) and his wife Dou Wan, dating to 113 BC. The tombs were carved into a mountain and contained the famous jade burial suits — each made of 2,498 jade pieces sewn together with gold wire. The suits are now in the Hebei Museum in Shijiazhuang, but the tombs themselves are fascinating to explore.
Hours: 8:30–17:00
Admission: ¥65 (both tombs)
