Qinhuangdao 秦皇岛市 — Where the Great Wall Meets the Sea
Qinhuangdao is named after Qin Shi Huang, the first emperor of China, who supposedly visited here seeking immortality. Today the city is Hebei's premier coastal destination, drawing beachgoers from Beijing and Tianjin during summer.
The city's most famous attraction is Shanhaiguan (山海关), where the Great Wall dramatically meets the Bohai Sea — known as 'Old Dragon's Head' (老龙头). This is the traditional eastern end of the Great Wall.
Beyond the historical sites, Beidaihe (北戴河) has been a seaside retreat for over a century, popular with Chinese political elites and ordinary vacationers alike.
The eastern terminus of the Ming Dynasty Great Wall, where the wall plunges into the Bohai Sea. Old Dragon's Head is the actual point where stone fortifications meet the water. The nearby Shanhaiguan Pass — the 'First Pass Under Heaven' (天下第一关) — is an impressive fortress with a massive gate tower. Walking along the wall to the sea is one of the Great Wall's most iconic experiences.
