Wanzhou 万州区 — Gateway to the Three Gorges
Wanzhou sits on the northern bank of the Yangtze River, roughly midway between Chongqing and Yichang. It's the gateway city for the Three Gorges cruise experience and the largest city in Chongqing's eastern region.
Often called the "Gateway to Eastern Sichuan" (川东门户), Wanzhou was a major trading port for centuries. The city was partially relocated after the Three Gorges Dam raised water levels, but its riverside character and food culture remain vibrant.
Wanzhou is famous across China for its grilled fish (万州烤鱼) — a spicy, numbing dish that has spread nationwide. The city's lively night markets and riverside dining scene are legendary.
Wanzhou is the starting or stopping point for many Three Gorges cruises. Both upstream (to Chongqing) and downstream (to Yichang/Wuhan) options are available. Luxury cruise operators include Victoria Cruises and Century Cruises. The downstream route through Qutang, Wu, and Xiling gorges is the most popular.
