Yunyang 云阳县 — Zhang Fei Temple & River Gorges
Yunyang sits along the Yangtze River between Wanzhou and Fengjie. The county is best known for the Zhang Fei Temple, relocated to higher ground when the Three Gorges Dam raised water levels.
Zhang Fei was a legendary general from the Three Kingdoms period, and his temple is one of the most important historical sites along the upper Yangtze.
Yunyang also offers pleasant river scenery and is a regular stop for Yangtze River cruises.
A 1,700-year-old temple dedicated to Zhang Fei, the fierce warrior from the Three Kingdoms period. The temple contains priceless calligraphy, stone carvings, and woodblock prints spanning 1,000 years of Chinese art. Originally located on the riverbank, the entire temple was relocated brick-by-brick to higher ground when the Three Gorges Dam raised water levels — one of China's most remarkable heritage preservation projects.
