Jiangjin 江津区 — Ancient Towns & Mountains
Jiangjin is one of Chongqing's most historically rich districts, with a well-preserved ancient town that rivals any in Sichuan province. The district stretches along the upper Yangtze, where the river cuts through dramatic gorges.
The crown jewel is Zhongshan Ancient Town (中山古镇), a thousand-year-old trading post with original wooden buildings clinging to a mountainside. Far less commercialized than Ciqikou, it offers an authentic glimpse of traditional Yangtze River life.
Jiangjin is also home to the Simian Mountain (四面山) nature reserve, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve with pristine forests, waterfalls, and tribal culture.
A 1,000+ year-old mountain town with over 200 preserved traditional wooden buildings. The town sits on a steep hillside overlooking a river valley, with narrow stone streets connecting tier after tier of ancient architecture. Local markets still operate on traditional schedules, selling handmade tofu, bamboo crafts, and mountain herbs. Remarkably uncommercialized.
