Shapingba 沙坪坝区 — University Town & Ancient Town Culture
Shapingba is Chongqing's intellectual heartland, home to major universities including Chongqing University and Southwest University of Political Science & Law. The large student population gives the area a youthful energy, with affordable cafés, bookstores, and creative spaces.
At its western edge lies Ciqikou (磁器口), one of Chongqing's most famous ancient towns. The 1,000-year-old river town draws millions of visitors with its traditional architecture, street food, and folk performances.
The district also contains significant WWII history sites, as Chongqing served as China's wartime capital from 1937–1945.
A preserved Ming-Qing Dynasty town along the Jialing River, famous for its stone-paved lanes, traditional teahouses, and incredible street food. Must-tries include fried dough twists (陈麻花), Mao blood curd (毛血旺), and qiaojiao beef (锅盖毛肚). The town gets extremely crowded on weekends — visit early morning or weekday afternoons for a more pleasant experience.

A memorial site honoring communist martyrs imprisoned by the KMT's secret police during China's civil war. The site includes the former prisons of Bai Gongguan and Zhazidong, depicted in the famous Chinese novel "Red Crag" (红岩). A sobering but important historical site with English signage.

One of China's oldest universities (founded 1929), the campus features beautiful grounds with a mix of historic Republican-era buildings and modern architecture. The surrounding University Town area has great cafés, bookshops, and inexpensive restaurants.
