Liaoning 辽宁 — Gateway to the Northeast
Liaoning is China's northeastern coastal province, bordering the Yellow Sea and Bohai Sea. The province blends Manchurian imperial history, Japanese occupation-era architecture, industrial heritage, and the pleasant coastal city of Dalian. For travelers, Liaoning offers a different flavor from the rest of China — the northeast (东北, Dongbei) has its own dialect, food, and cultural identity.
Shenyang 沈阳
Shenyang Imperial Palace 沈阳故宫
China's second-largest imperial palace complex (after the Forbidden City), built by Nurhaci and Huangtaiji, the founders of the Qing Dynasty, in 1625. The palace features Manchu architectural elements not found in Beijing — including a distinctive octagonal Dazheng Hall (大政殿).

9.18 Historical Museum 九一八历史博物馆
A sobering museum documenting the Japanese invasion of Manchuria on September 18, 1931, which began Japan's 14-year occupation of northeast China. Important for understanding modern Chinese history.
Free (ID required). Open: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM (closed Mondays).
Beiling Park (Zhaoling Tomb) 北陵公园/昭陵
The tomb of Huangtaiji (second Qing emperor), set in a large park. The tomb is a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the "Imperial Tombs of the Qing Dynasty."
Admission: 5 RMB (park) + 50 RMB (tomb). Open: 7:00 AM - 5:00 PM.
Dalian 大连 — Coastal Resort
Dalian is Liaoning's most pleasant city — a coastal resort with European-style architecture, clean beaches, and a relaxed pace. The city was under Russian and Japanese influence, visible in its buildings.
Xinghai Square 星海广场
The largest city square in Asia. Night views of the bay are spectacular. Walk along the coastal promenade to Xinghai Park and the Dalian Shell Museum.

Bangchuidao Beach 棒棰岛
Dalian's best beach — a protected area with clean water and mountain backdrop. Former site of state guesthouse for visiting dignitaries.
Admission: 20 RMB. Open: 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM. Located 10 km from city center.
Russian-Japanese Quarter
Dalian's Zhongshan Square area features Russian, Japanese, and Art Deco architecture from the colonial period. Walking tours reveal this fascinating layered history.
Benxi Water Cave 本溪水洞
Asia's largest water-filled cave (5.8 km), with underground river boat rides through spectacular stalactite formations. The temperature inside is a constant 12°C year-round.
Admission: 175 RMB (includes boat ride). Open: 8:30 AM - 4:00 PM. Located 80 km from Shenyang.

High-speed trains: Beijing to Shenyang: 2.5 hours. Shenyang to Dalian: 2 hours.
Best Time: May-October. Summer for Dalian beaches. Winter is cold (-10°C to -20°C).
Food: Dongbei cuisine — hearty, salty, and generous: Guo Bao Rou (锅包肉, sweet-and-sour pork), Dumplings (饺子), Pickled cabbage (酸菜). Dalian seafood is excellent.
