Dandong 丹东市 — Border City — Korea Across the River
Dandong sits on the Yalu River directly across from North Korea's Sinuiju. This strategic border city offers one of the closest views of North Korea possible for foreign visitors.
The city is famous for the Yalu River Broken Bridge, a half-destroyed bridge that stands as a war memorial and observation deck. Looking across the river, you can see North Korean buildings, roads, and occasionally people.
Dandong also serves as the gateway to the Changbai Mountains and Ji'an area, with significant Goguryeo Kingdom heritage sites.
The remains of a bridge bombed during the Korean War (1950), now preserved as a war memorial and observation platform. Walking to the end of the broken bridge brings you to the middle of the Yalu River, with North Korea's Sinuiju visible across the water. A powerful and surreal experience.
