Xiaonanhai Lake (小南海, "Little South Sea") is one of China's most unique geological wonders — a massive freshwater lake created by an earthquake in 1856. The magnitude 6.3 earthquake triggered a landslide that blocked the Qingshui River, forming a 2.8-square-kilometer lake surrounded by dramatic cliffs and landslide debris. The lake is one of the world's best-preserved "earthquake barrier lakes" and has been designated as a national geological park and wetland reserve.
The lake's most striking feature is its setting within a deep valley carved by the Qingshui River. Visitors can explore the landslide-created formations along the shore, including massive boulders (some weighing over 10,000 tons) that were tossed into their current positions during the earthquake. The surrounding hills are covered in dense forest, creating a serene, emerald-green landscape. Boat tours take visitors across the lake and into narrow coves where the water reflects the cliff walls like a mirror. The area is also home to Tujia and Miao ethnic minority communities who maintain traditional villages nearby.
Xiaonanhai is located about 30 kilometers from downtown Qianjiang and is accessible via local buses or hired drivers. The scenic area includes walking trails along the lakeshore, boat rentals, and viewing platforms. Allow 2–3 hours for a visit. The lake is particularly beautiful in spring when wildflowers bloom along the shore, and in autumn when the surrounding forests turn red and gold. Morning visits offer the calmest water for photography.
Qianjiang Gorge (黔江峡谷) is a dramatic karst canyon carved by the Apeng River through the Wuling Mountains. The gorge stretches for several kilometers, with vertical limestone cliffs rising 200–300 meters on either side of the emerald-green river. The area is part of the Apeng River National Wetland Park and offers some of the most spectacular canyon scenery in southwestern China, yet remains relatively unknown to international tourists.
The gorge can be explored via a combination of walking trails and boat rides. The main walking path follows the riverbank, passing beneath overhanging cliffs and through natural rock arches. Key viewpoints include the "First Bend of Apeng River" where the river makes a dramatic 180-degree turn, and "Eagle Beak Cliff" where the rock formation resembles a bird's beak. The boat ride takes visitors deeper into the gorge where the cliffs narrow to just 20–30 meters apart. The water is remarkably clear, and in summer, visitors can see fish swimming in the shallows.
Qianjiang Gorge is located about 15 kilometers from downtown Qianjiang. The scenic area is open year-round but is most accessible in spring and autumn when water levels are moderate. Summer brings higher water levels which can limit boat access, while winter offers the clearest water but cooler temperatures. Allow 3–4 hours for a full visit including hiking and boat ride. Bring comfortable walking shoes with good grip as some trail sections can be slippery.
Zhuoshui Ancient Town (濯水古镇) is a beautifully preserved riverside town dating back over 1,000 years, situated on the banks of the Apeng River. Founded during the Tang Dynasty, Zhuoshui was an important commercial hub on the ancient salt trade route between Sichuan and Hunan. The town retains much of its Qing Dynasty architecture, with traditional wooden buildings, stone-paved streets, and covered walkways that reflect its prosperous merchant past.
The town's most iconic landmark is the 303-meter Zhuoshui Wind and Rain Bridge (风雨桥), a covered wooden bridge built in traditional Dong ethnic minority style. The bridge, one of the longest of its kind in the world, connects the old town to the opposite riverbank and serves as both a transportation link and a social gathering space. The bridge is beautifully illuminated at night, creating a stunning reflection on the Apeng River. Other highlights include the Wan Tian Palace (a former guildhall), traditional courtyard houses, and the old town gate.
Zhuoshui Ancient Town is located about 25 kilometers from downtown Qianjiang and can be reached by bus or hired car. The town is free to enter and remains a living community with local residents continuing traditional crafts and daily life. Allow 2–3 hours to explore the town and bridge. The best time to visit is in the late afternoon and evening when the lighting is most atmospheric and the bridge illumination begins. Local specialties include tofu dishes and rice wine — try the riverside restaurants for fresh river fish.
Puhua Underground River (蒲花暗河) is a spectacular karst cave system and underground river located near Zhuoshui Ancient Town. The river flows for approximately 2 kilometers through a series of limestone caves, emerging periodically through dramatic skylights where cave ceilings have collapsed. The underground river is one of Chongqing's most impressive geological features, offering a journey through towering caverns, narrow passages, and crystal-clear subterranean waters.
The cave system is explored by boat, with local guides navigating small vessels through the underground passages. The journey begins at a natural entrance where daylight streams in, then proceeds into darker sections illuminated by installed lighting. Highlights include the "Three Natural Bridges" — sections where the cave ceiling has completely collapsed, creating dramatic openings to the sky. At one point, visitors can see three such skylights in a row, each revealing different angles of the forest above. The water is remarkably clear, and stalactites hang from the ceiling throughout the journey.
Puhua Underground River is located adjacent to Zhuoshui Ancient Town and is often visited in combination. The boat ride takes about 40–60 minutes. The cave maintains a constant temperature of around 18°C year-round, making it a cool retreat in summer. The attraction is located within the Puhua Karst Geopark, which also includes surface walking trails through the collapsed sinkholes and karst formations. Wear non-slip shoes as the dock and boat surfaces can be wet.
Wulingshan (武陵山, "Wuling Mountain") is a scenic mountain area on the border of Qianjiang District and neighboring Hubei Province, part of the larger Wuling Mountain Range that spans Chongqing, Hunan, Hubei, and Guizhou. The Qianjiang section features dense forests, alpine meadows, hiking trails, and panoramic viewpoints. The area reaches elevations of over 1,900 meters, offering a cool escape from Chongqing's summer heat and spectacular autumn foliage.
The main attraction is the Wulingshan Forest Park, which covers over 10,000 hectares of protected forest. The park features several hiking trails of varying difficulty, from gentle boardwalk loops through meadows to more challenging climbs to summit viewpoints. The "Sea of Clouds" viewpoint offers the best panoramic views, particularly at sunrise when mist fills the valleys below. The area is home to diverse wildlife including macaques, pangolins, and numerous bird species. In spring, wild azaleas bloom across the hillsides in shades of pink, red, and white.
Wulingshan is located about 40 kilometers from downtown Qianjiang and is best reached by hired car. The mountain road is winding but well-maintained. Allow a full day for the visit, including hiking time. The best seasons are spring (April–May for flowers) and autumn (October–November for foliage). Summer temperatures are typically 8–10°C cooler than downtown Qianjiang, making it a popular weekend retreat. Bring layers as mountain weather can change quickly.
Bamaozhai (芭茅寨) is a traditional Tujia ethnic minority village nestled in the mountains of Qianjiang District. The village has preserved its traditional wooden architecture, cultural practices, and rural way of life, offering visitors an authentic glimpse into Tujia culture. The village is particularly known for its traditional stilt houses (吊脚楼), hand-woven textiles, and Tujia folk songs and dances.
The village consists of about 50 traditional wooden houses built on stilts along a mountainside, following the typical Tujia architectural style adapted to the steep terrain. The houses are connected by stone paths and wooden walkways, creating an atmospheric setting that feels unchanged by time. Visitors can observe traditional crafts including batik (蜡染) and bamboo weaving, and sample Tujia specialties such as smoked pork, sour fish soup, and glutinous rice cakes. Local residents often perform traditional songs and dances for visitors, particularly during festivals.
Bamaozhai is located about 20 kilometers from downtown Qianjiang and can be reached by local bus or hired car. The village is free to enter and welcomes visitors year-round. Allow 2–3 hours for a visit. The best time to visit is during the Tujia New Year (usually in late January or early February) or other festival periods when cultural activities are most vibrant. Photography is generally welcomed, but always ask permission before photographing individuals. Consider purchasing local handicrafts as a way to support the community.
The Apeng River (阿蓬江) is the major waterway flowing through Qianjiang District, originating in Hubei Province and joining the Wu River (a Yangtze tributary) in neighboring Pengshui County. The river is known for its emerald-green waters, dramatic karst gorges, and rich ecological diversity. A 60-kilometer section of the river has been designated as the Apeng River National Wetland Park, protecting its unique riverine ecosystem and traditional fishing culture.
The river offers multiple ways to experience its beauty. River rafting is popular in summer, with gentle rapids suitable for beginners and families. The section near Qianjiang Gorge offers the most dramatic scenery, where the river cuts through limestone cliffs. Fishing villages along the banks maintain traditional fishing methods using cormorant birds — a practice that can be observed at dawn when fishermen take their boats out. The wetland park also supports diverse birdlife including herons, egrets, and kingfishers, making it a good destination for birdwatching.
The Apeng River can be accessed from multiple points along its course, with the most developed facilities near Zhuoshui Ancient Town and Qianjiang Gorge. Rafting trips typically run 2–3 hours and cost ¥80–120 per person depending on the route. The river is at its most scenic in spring and autumn when the surrounding vegetation is lush and water levels are moderate. Summer can bring high water levels that limit some activities, while winter offers the clearest water for photography. Several riverside restaurants serve fresh river fish prepared in local style.
