Suzhou 苏州市 — Venice of the East — Classical Gardens & Water Towns
Suzhou is famous for its classical Chinese gardens, elegant water towns, and silk production. Marco Polo reportedly called it the 'Venice of the East,' and the comparison holds — the old city is crisscrossed by canals and bridges.
Suzhou's UNESCO-listed classical gardens represent the pinnacle of Chinese landscape design. These private gardens, created by scholars and officials over centuries, compress mountains, lakes, and forests into miniature landscapes within city walls.
The nearby water towns of Zhouzhuang, Tongli, and Luzhi offer a glimpse of traditional canal life that has existed for over 1,000 years.
The largest and most famous of Suzhou's classical gardens, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Built in 1509 during the Ming Dynasty, the garden covers 5.2 hectares and is considered the finest example of Chinese garden design. The garden's central lake, zigzag bridges, and meticulously arranged rockeries create a different view at every turn. Half the garden was designed by Wen Zhengming, one of the Ming Dynasty's greatest painters.
