Wushan 巫山县 — Wu Gorge & Lesser Three Gorges
Wushan sits at the entrance to the Wu Gorge, the second and most atmospheric of the Three Gorges. The county town clings to steep hillsides above the Yangtze, with narrow streets and a frontier-town character.
The district's main attractions are the Lesser Three Gorges (小三峡) on the Daning River — a tributary that carves through even more dramatic scenery than the main gorges. The Mini Three Gorges (小小三峡) go even further upstream into pristine wilderness.
Wushan is also famous for its annual red leaf festival in autumn, when the gorge forests turn spectacular shades of red and gold.
The Daning River's three gorges — Longmen (Dragon Gate), Bawu (Fog), and Dicui (Emerald) — are widely considered even more beautiful than the main Three Gorges. The narrow canyon walls, crystal-clear water, and hanging coffins of the ancient Ba people create an otherworldly experience. Boat tours depart from Wushan.
