Guangzhou 广州 — The Food Capital
Canton Tower 广州塔
At 600 meters, "the Skinny Waist" (小蛮腰) is Guangzhou's most recognizable landmark. The observation deck offers 360° views of the Pearl River. The tower lights up spectacularly at night.

Shamian Island 沙面岛

Chen Clan Ancestral Hall 陈家祠
A masterpiece of Lingnan (southern Chinese) architecture, this clan academy features exquisite wood carvings, stone carvings, brick sculptures, and ceramic decorations. Built in 1894 by the Chen families of 72 Guangdong counties.

Temple of the Six Banyan Trees 六榕寺
A 1,500-year-old Buddhist temple with a striking nine-story pagoda (Hua Ta). One of Guangzhou's oldest religious sites, offering a peaceful retreat from the city.

Dim Sum 早茶
Guangzhou's dim sum culture is legendary. Local families gather for morning tea (早茶, literally "morning tea") on weekends, spending hours eating small dishes. Try:

Window of the World 世界之窗
A theme park with 130+ miniature replicas of world landmarks — Eiffel Tower, Pyramids, Taj Mahal — all at 1:1 to 1:15 scale. Popular with families.

OCT Loft (Overseas Chinese Town) 华侨城创意园
Shenzhen's arts district, housed in converted factory buildings. Galleries, cafés, independent bookstores, and live music venues. The city's creative soul.

Huaqiangbei Electronics Market 华强北
The world's largest electronics market — floors and floors of components, gadgets, phones, and everything tech-related. Even if you're not shopping, it's a fascinating cultural experience. Head to SEG Plaza for the full spectacle.
Chaozhou 潮州 — Eastern Guangdong Heritage
Chaozhou (also spelled "Teochew" in its dialect) is a city of distinctive culture and cuisine, different from Cantonese. Known for its beef hotpot, gongfu tea ceremony, and well-preserved old town.
Kaiyuan Temple 开元寺
A 1,300-year-old Buddhist temple with elegant Tang dynasty architecture and ancient bodhi trees.

Guangji Bridge 广济桥
China's first pontoon bridge (built 1171), featuring 18 floating boats that open to let ships pass. One of China's Four Famous Ancient Bridges.
Chaozhou Beef Hotpot 潮汕牛肉火锅
Different from Sichuan hotpot — fresh beef sliced paper-thin, briefly dipped in clear broth. The quality of beef here is exceptional. Try at any local restaurant; they'll likely bring 15+ different cuts.

Airports: Guangzhou Baiyun (CAN) — major international hub. Shenzhen Bao'an (SZX) — domestic + limited international.
Transportation: Guangzhou and Shenzhen both have extensive metro systems. High-speed trains connect major cities within 1-3 hours. Guangzhou-Shenzhen: 30 minutes.
Climate: Subtropical — hot and humid year-round. Best visiting October-March. Summer brings heavy rain and typhoons (June-Sep).
Hong Kong Border: From Shenzhen, cross at Luohu, Futian, or Huanggang checkpoints. Separate visa may be required.
