Alipay with International Cards: Complete Setup Guide (2026)

Until recently, the biggest headache for foreigners in China was paying for things. Alipay and WeChat Pay dominated, but both required a Chinese bank account. Tourists were stuck carrying cash or begging friends to scan QR codes on their behalf.

That changed. Alipay now allows foreigners to link international Visa and Mastercard directly through its "Tour Pass" feature. It's not perfect — there are fees and some limitations — but it works, and it means you can pay at virtually any merchant in China without a Chinese bank account.

What Is Alipay Tour Pass?

Tour Pass is Alipay's feature for international travelers. Here's how it works:

  1. You link your international credit or debit card (Visa or Mastercard)
  2. You load RMB onto your Alipay balance from your card
  3. You spend that balance at any Alipay-accepting merchant (which is almost all of them)

Think of it as a prepaid wallet funded by your foreign card. You're not paying merchants directly — you're spending from a prepaid balance.

Fees and Limits

ItemDetail
Loading fee~3% on card loads (varies by card issuer)
Minimum load¥100 (~$14)
Maximum balance¥2,000 (~$278)
Maximum single load¥2,000
Transaction feeNone (paying merchants is free)
Refund to cardYes, unused balance can be refunded (within 90 days)

The 3% loading fee is the main cost. If you load ¥2,000, you'll pay about ¥60 in fees. That's roughly $8.50 — reasonable for a trip's worth of payments.

Step-by-Step Setup

Step 1: Download Alipay
Search "Alipay" in your App Store or Google Play. The international version auto-detects your phone number country. Download and open the app.
Step 2: Create an Account
Sign up with your international phone number. You'll receive an SMS verification code. Choose your country code prefix (+1, +44, +61, etc.).
Step 3: Enable Tour Pass
After logging in, the app should prompt you to set up payment. Look for "Tour Pass" or "International Payment." If you don't see it immediately, go to Me → Settings → Payment Settings → International Card Payment.
Step 4: Link Your Card
Enter your Visa or Mastercard details (card number, expiry, CVV). Alipay will charge a small test amount (¥1 or less) to verify the card. This charge will be refunded.
Step 5: Load RMB
Enter the amount you want to load (minimum ¥100). The 3% fee is applied at this point. The RMB balance appears in your Alipay account instantly.
Step 6: Start Paying
Open Alipay, tap "Pay," and scan the merchant's QR code or show your QR code to be scanned. The payment deducts from your Tour Pass balance.

What You Can Pay For

What you can't do with Tour Pass: Transfer money to other Alipay users, pay utility bills, or use Alipay's investment features. Tour Pass is for merchant payments only.

Tips and Troubleshooting

Set up before you arrive. Alipay's website and some features work better outside China. Create your account and link your card at home, then test with a small load.

Don't load too much at once. The maximum is ¥2,000, but if your trip is longer, load ¥500–1,000 at a time. The refund process is straightforward but takes 3–5 business days.

Keep cash as backup. If your phone dies, loses signal, or Alipay has a temporary issue, you'll need cash for the basics.

Card declined? Try a different card, or contact your bank to confirm international transactions are enabled. Some banks block Chinese transactions by default.

WeChat Pay vs Alipay for Foreigners

Both now support international cards. Alipay is generally easier for tourists because of the dedicated Tour Pass feature. WeChat Pay requires you to navigate more Chinese-language settings. See our full comparison.
