Chuxiong 楚雄 — Yi Heritage — Land of Dinosaurs and Fire
Chuxiong (楚雄) prefecture is the heartland of the Yi ethnic group (彝族), Yunnan's largest minority. The region is famous for dinosaur fossils (Lufeng Dinosaur Valley), Yi culture, and the Ten-Month Solar Calendar — an ancient Yi astronomical system.
Lufeng has yielded some of the world's most important dinosaur fossils, including Lufengosaurus, a Jurassic sauropod. The Yi people's Torch Festival (火把节) in July is one of Yunnan's most vibrant celebrations.
Chuxiong is 120 km from Kunming (1.5 hours by train). Allow 2-3 days.
China's premier dinosaur site. The valley contains dozens of complete dinosaur skeletons including the famous Lufengosaurus. Fossils date to the Jurassic period (180 million years ago). Museum and excavation sites open to visitors.

Evening safety: Chinese cities are generally safe at night. Stick to well-lit main streets after 22:00. Avoid unlicensed taxi services.
Photography etiquette: Ask permission before photographing locals, especially elderly people and children. Temples may prohibit indoor photography.
