Shandong 山东 — Birthplace of Chinese Civilization

Updated: April 2026 | Suggested stay: 5-8 days

Shandong is where it all began. Confucius was born here. Mencius too. Mount Tai (泰山, Taishan) has been China's most sacred mountain for over 3,000 years, climbed by emperors and poets. The province offers a remarkable combination: ancient philosophical heritage, stunning mountains, coastal cities with German colonial history, and some of China's best seafood and beer.

Qufu 曲阜 — Confucius Hometown

Qufu is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, preserving the architectural legacy of China's most influential philosopher. The three main sites — Temple of Confucius, Cemetery of Confucius, and Kong Family Mansion — form one of China's most important cultural complexes.

Temple of Confucius 孔庙

Built in 478 BC, expanded over 2,000 years, this is the largest and most renowned Confucian temple in the world. The complex features 460 rooms, 1,300 ancient tablets, and magnificent cypress trees, some over 2,000 years old. The Hall of Great Achievement (大成殿) is the architectural centerpiece.

Admission: 140 RMB (three-site combo ticket). Open: 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM. Access: High-speed train from Jinan (1 hour) or Beijing (2 hours).

Kong Family Mansion 孔府

Cemetery of Confucius 孔林

A 2 km² forested cemetery where Confucius and over 100,000 of his descendants are buried. Ancient cypress trees create a solemn, sacred atmosphere. A 1,266-meter "Divine Path" leads from the city gate to Confucius' tomb.

Mount Tai 泰山 — China's Most Sacred Mountain

Mount Tai (1,545m) is the most revered of China's Five Sacred Mountains (五岳). Emperors climbed it to perform fengshan sacrifices to heaven and earth. The mountain has been a pilgrimage site for over 3,000 years, with inscriptions carved into cliffs by emperors, scholars, and poets. The sunrise from the summit is legendary.

Admission: 115 RMB (peak season), 100 RMB (off-peak). Open: 24 hours (hike overnight for sunrise). Cable car: 100 RMB one way.

Hiking options:

Access: Train to Tai'an (泰山站). Jinan to Tai'an: 20 minutes by high-speed train.
