Fuling 涪陵区 — Baiji Dolphins & Underground Wonder
Fuling sits at the confluence of the Wu and Yangtze rivers, about 100 km downstream from Chongqing city. The district is famous worldwide thanks to Peter Hessler's bestselling book "River Town: Two Years on the Yangtze," which documented life in Fuling during the 1990s.
The city is known for two major attractions: the stunning Fuling White Crane Ridge underwater museum and the area's famous zhacai (榨菜) — pickled mustard tuber that is one of China's most ubiquitous condiments.
Fuling's karst landscape has produced one of the world's most spectacular underground attractions — the Wulong Karst caves and natural bridges, shared with Wulong County.
A unique UNESCO-adjacent site where ancient stone fish carvings and 30,000+ characters of calligraphy have been preserved underwater. The original stone ridge, dating back 1,200 years, was submerged by the Three Gorges Dam. An ingenious underwater pressureless container allows visitors to view the carvings through glass tunnels. The stone fish served as ancient water level markers.
