Shanxi 山西 — China's Ancient Architecture Museum
Shanxi (not to be confused with Shaanxi — the extra "a" makes all the difference) is China's undisputed capital of ancient architecture. Over 70% of China's surviving pre-Ming dynasty wooden structures are in Shanxi. This is where Chinese civilization crystallized — from ancient pagodas to Buddhist cave art to a perfectly preserved Ming dynasty walled city. Shanxi is less touristy than neighboring provinces, which means fewer crowds and more authentic experiences.
Pingyao Ancient City 平遥古城
A UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the best-preserved ancient walled cities in China. Founded in the 14th century (Ming Dynasty), Pingyao served as China's financial center in the 19th century — the first banks (票号) were founded here. The city walls, streets, and buildings remain largely unchanged from 600 years ago.
City Walls 城墙
A complete 6.2-km circuit around the city, 12 meters high. Walk or cycle the top for panoramic views. Originally built 1370, rebuilt 1703.
City pass: 125 RMB (includes 22 attractions for 3 days). Walls alone: free to view from outside. Open: 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM. High-speed train from Taiyuan: 40 minutes.
Rishengchang Draft Bank 日升昌
China's first bank, established in 1823. This courtyard complex shows how Shanxi merchants managed China's early banking system, with branches across the country.
Ming-Qing Street 明清一条街
The main street through old Pingyao, lined with traditional shops and restaurants. Atmospheric at night when lanterns light up the cobblestones.
Yungang Grottoes 云冈石窟
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Yungang Grottoes contain 51,000 Buddhist statues carved into sandstone cliffs between 460-524 AD during the Northern Wei Dynasty. The caves stretch for 1 km and feature China's earliest monumental Buddhist sculpture. The colossal 17-meter seated Buddha in Cave 20 is one of the most iconic images of Chinese Buddhist art.
Admission: 120 RMB. Open: 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM. Located 16 km west of Datong. Fly to Datong Yungang Airport, or take high-speed train from Beijing (2 hours).
Hanging Temple 悬空寺
Perched precariously on a cliff face 50 meters above the ground, the Hanging Temple (built 491 AD) is an architectural marvel. The temple combines Buddhist, Taoist, and Confucian elements — a rare tri-religious site. Wooden beams inserted into the rock face support the structure, which has survived earthquakes and centuries of weathering.
Admission: 130 RMB. Open: 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM. Located 65 km from Datong, near Hunyuan County. Often combined with Yungang Grottoes as a day trip.
Mount Wutai 五台山
One of China's Four Sacred Buddhist Mountains and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Home to over 50 monasteries dating from the 1st century AD. The mountain is sacred to Manjushri (文殊菩萨), the Bodhisattva of Wisdom. The highest peak, Beitai Ding (北台顶), reaches 3,061 meters.
Admission: 135 RMB. Open: All day (monasteries generally 7:00 AM - 5:00 PM). Access: Train to Wutaishan Station or bus from Taiyuan (3 hours).
Taiyuan 太原 — Provincial Capital
Taiyuan serves as the base for exploring Shanxi. Key sites:
Jinci Temple 晋祠
A temple complex dating back 1,400+ years, featuring the famous Song dynasty painted clay figures of maidservants and ancient cypress trees.
Admission: 80 RMB. Located 25 km southwest of Taiyuan. Bus or taxi.
Shanxi Museum 山西博物院
One of China's best provincial museums, showcasing Shanxi's remarkable history from prehistoric times through the Ming-Qing dynasties. Highlights: Shang and Zhou dynasty bronze wares, Buddhist artifacts, and the famous "Bird and Beast" bronze zun.
Free (ID required). Open: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM (closed Mondays). Metro: Shanxi Museum Station (Line 2).
