Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region (宁夏) is China's only provincial-level Hui Muslim region, where Islamic culture blends seamlessly with traditional Chinese heritage. This compact region along the Yellow River is home to stunning desert landscapes, the mysterious Western Xia Dynasty tombs (often called "China's Pyramids"), and some of China's most important mosques. The capital Yinchuan offers a fascinating glimpse into Hui Muslim life, with halal restaurants, Arabic-style architecture, and the excellent Ningxia Museum displaying artifacts from the vanished Western Xia Kingdom. Beyond the city, the nearby Shapotou area lets you ride camels along the Yellow River and sandboard down massive sand dunes. With its unique cultural identity, dramatic desert scenery, and rich history spanning over 1,000 years, Ningxia offers travelers an experience found nowhere else in China.
