Guizhou 贵州 — China's Hidden Gem

Updated: April 2026 | Suggested stay: 4-7 days

Guizhou is one of China's least visited but most rewarding provinces. Long dismissed as a poor, mountainous backwater, Guizhou is finally being discovered for what it truly is: a landscape of karst mountains, cascading waterfalls, misty rice terraces, and over 49 ethnic minority groups. This is China's cultural diversity capital — where Miao (苗族), Dong (侗族), Buyi (布依族), and other minorities maintain living traditions of silver jewelry, batik, embroidery, and music.

Guiyang 贵阳 — The Cool City

Guizhou's capital is known as the "Summer Resort" (爽爽的贵阳) for its mild climate — a rarity in southern China. Guiyang is the transit hub for exploring the province.

Jiaxiu Pavilion 甲秀楼

A 400-year-old pavilion on a boulder in the Nanming River. Guiyang's landmark and a pleasant riverside area for an evening stroll.

Free. Open: 8:00 AM - 10:00 PM. City center, walkable.

Qingyan Ancient Town 青岩古镇

A well-preserved Ming dynasty garrison town (built 1378) with stone walls, Buddhist/Taoist/Catholic temples, and traditional food. Known for rose candy (玫瑰糖) and pig's trotter dishes.

Admission: 30 RMB. 30 km from Guiyang. Bus or taxi.

Anshun 安顺 — Huangguoshu Waterfall Region

Huangguoshu Waterfall 黄果树瀑布

Asia's largest waterfall at 77.8 meters high and 101 meters wide. The waterfall is part of a 18-square-km scenic area with multiple viewing points, including behind the waterfall itself (Water Curtain Cave). Also within the area: Doupotang Waterfall (the widest), Tianxingqiao Scenic Area (karst formations), and Bonsai Garden.

Admission: 160 RMB (3-day pass). Open: 7:00 AM - 7:00 PM (summer). Access: High-speed train to Anshun West (1 hour from Guiyang), then shuttle bus (40 min). Plan a full day.

Getu River Scenic Area 格凸河

Dramatic karst gorges with underground rivers, caves, and the famous "hole in the mountain" visible from the access road. Local Miao people perform a unique cliff-climbing display — climbing barefoot up sheer rock faces using vines.

Admission: 100 RMB. Located 160 km from Guiyang.

Xijiang Qianhu Miao Village 西江千户苗寨

The largest Miao village in China — literally "Village of a Thousand Households." Over 1,400 wooden stilt houses (吊脚楼) cascade down a hillside, creating a dramatic panorama, especially at night when thousands of lanterns light up. The Miao people here maintain traditions of silver jewelry making, batik, and grand singing and dancing performances.

Admission: 100 RMB (includes shuttle). Open: All day. Located 200 km from Guiyang. High-speed train to Kaili South (1 hour), then bus to village.

Tip: Stay overnight for the sunset and night views. The village transforms after dark. Book a hillside guesthouse for the best panorama.

Zhaoxing Dong Village 肇兴侗寨

Known as "the most beautiful Dong village in China," Zhaoxing features five wooden drum towers (鼓楼) of different styles, wind and rain bridges (风雨桥), and Dong Grand Choir (侗族大歌) — a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. The choir performs polyphonic singing without musical instruments — hauntingly beautiful.

Admission: 100 RMB. Located 280 km from Guiyang. High-speed train to Congjiang (3.5 hours from Guiyang), then bus (30 min).

Zhenyuan Ancient Town 镇远古城

A 2,000-year-old town on the Wuyang River, shaped like an S-curve with historic buildings stacked along the water. One of Guizhou's most atmospheric old towns, with cave exploration and river rafting available.

Free to enter town; some attractions 20-30 RMB each. High-speed train to Zhenyuan (2 hours from Guiyang).

Practical Information

Transportation: Guiyang Longdongbao (KWE) is the main airport. High-speed rail connects Guiyang to most destinations within 1-3 hours. Roads are winding and mountainous — trains are preferred.

Climate: Pleasant year-round. Summers are cool (unlike most of southern China). Winters are mild. Rain is common — bring an umbrella. "There's no sunshine for three days in Guizhou, and no flat ground for three li" (天无三日晴,地无三尺平).

Best Time: March-May and September-November. Ethnic festivals happen year-round — check local calendars.

Food: Siwawa (丝娃娃 — spring rolls), Changwang Noodles (肠旺面), sour soup fish (酸汤鱼), glutinous rice (糯米饭). Guizhou cuisine is famously sour and spicy.
