Gansu 甘肃 — The Silk Road Corridor

Updated: April 2026 | Suggested stay: 5-7 days

Gansu is a narrow province stretching 1,500 km across northwest China, forming the ancient Hexi Corridor (河西走廊) — the passage through which the Silk Road entered China. This is one of the world's great historic travel routes: Buddhist cave art at Dunhuang, the Ming-era fortress at Jiayuguan, rainbow-colored mountains at Zhangye, and desert landscapes unchanged for millennia.

Dunhuang 敦煌 — Gateway to the West

Mogao Caves 莫高窟

A UNESCO World Heritage Site with 492 caves containing 45,000+ square meters of murals and 2,400+ painted statues, created over 1,000 years (4th-14th centuries). This is the world's largest and richest collection of Buddhist art. The "Library Cave" (藏经洞) contained 50,000 manuscripts discovered in 1900. Digital exhibition center shows reproductions; shuttle bus takes you to caves. Only 8 caves are open to regular visitors; special caves require extra fee.

Admission: 238 RMB (includes 2 films, shuttle, 8 caves). Open: 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM. Book well in advance (limited daily quota). Located 25 km from Dunhuang city.

Crescent Lake and Singing Sand Dunes 鸣沙山月牙泉

A spring-fed lake shaped like a crescent moon, miraculously surviving in the desert for thousands of years. Surrounded by massive sand dunes. Camel rides and sandboarding available. Sunset views are spectacular.

Admission: 110 RMB. Open: 7:00 AM - 7:00 PM. Located 5 km from Dunhuang. Best: Early morning or late afternoon.

Jiayuguan 嘉峪关 — End of the Great Wall

The western terminus of the Ming Great Wall. The fortress (嘉峪关关城) was built in 1372 to guard the strategic pass between the Qilian and Mazong mountains. "The First Strategic Pass Under Heaven" (天下第一雄关). The Overhanging Great Wall (悬壁长城) clings to the mountainside.

Admission: 110 RMB (combo ticket). Open: 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM. High-speed train from Lanzhou: 4 hours.

Zhangye Danxia 张掖丹霞 — Rainbow Mountains

Striped mountains in red, orange, yellow, green, and blue — the result of mineral deposits and erosion over millions of years. One of China's most surreal landscapes. Best photographed at sunrise or sunset when colors intensify. The viewing platforms are accessed by shuttle bus.

Admission: 54 RMB + 20 RMB shuttle. Open: 6:00 AM - 6:00 PM. Located 40 km from Zhangye city. High-speed train from Lanzhou: 3 hours.

Maijishan Grottoes 麦积山石窟

One of China's four great Buddhist grottoes. Carved into a haystack-shaped mountain, with 194 caves and 7,200+ clay statues accessible via suspended walkways. The setting is dramatic — statues cling to the cliff face.

Admission: 70 RMB. Located 50 km from Tianshui. Train from Lanzhou: 2 hours.

Lanzhou 兰州 — Provincial Capital

The transit hub for Gansu. Famous for Lanzhou Beef Noodles (兰州牛肉拉面) — served everywhere in China. The Yellow River flows through the city. Visit the Gansu Provincial Museum (甘肃省博物馆) for Silk Road artifacts including the famous "Flying Horse of Gansu" (马踏飞燕).

Museum: Free (reservation required). Noodles: Try at any local shop — best are hole-in-the-wall places with queues.
